CAMDEN TOWN

Camden Town is an iconic central London area in the heart of the Borough of Camden. It lies two miles north of Oxford Street and borders with Kentish Town, Islington, King’s Cross, Chalk Farm, Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park. It is the core of this large, cosmopolitan and bohemian district, which is the ‘third largest London economy’ with over half of its businesses linked to the creative industry. It is home to a wide range of academic institutions, performing art venues and museums. Camden Town residents are predominantly young cosmopolitan professionals, artist, and media people.

Set in London’s Travel Zone 2, Camden Town has outstanding connectivity:  Camden Town Underground station has access to both the Bank and Charing Cross branches of the Northern line.  Camden Overground runs trains to Stratford, Richmond and Clapham Junction. A short walk away from Camden Lock Village is Kentish Town Station for Thames Link rail services to Bedford, Luton, Gatwick and Brighton. King’s Cross St Pancras rail, for intercity and European travels, is only 2 stops away from Camden Town.

Historically, Camden grew around the Regent’s Canal, which, on its way to King’s Cross St Pancras, cut through the area it in 1820. The massive employment available with the arrival of the railway stations, Euston (1837), King's Cross (1852), and St Pancras (1868) provided further scope for large housing and further industry developments. In the late 19th century, the area was packed with wharfs and goods yards, piano, organ and furniture workshops and units housing light industries supporting the advancing rail development.

The Borough of Camden was formed in 1965, by merging Hampstead, Holborn and St Pancras into one administrative district. It is named after the first Earl of Camden: Charles Pratt was the first developer of this once rural area, part of the large Middlesex county.  First works date back to 1791.

In the Fifties and Sixties a large arts and intellectual community settled in the area, followed by the iconic Camden Town market which opened in 1973. The night life flourished around Camden Lock establishing some of the best London’s music and performing arts venue still running today such as The Roundhouse, Jaz Café, Koko, Electric Ballroom, Dingwalls, The Dublin Castle, Green Note.

Camden Town is a sought-after London location for its proximity to large parks and open green spaces - staples of quality urban living. The district has its own stretch of the Regent’s Canal path, and is a stone’s throw away from the charming village and park of Primrose Hill, as well as the vast playground fields and landscaped gardens of Regent’s Park. Further afield, a short walkway, are the wonderfully varied Hampstead Heath, the new King’s Cross commercial quarters, and the picturesque neighbourhood of Little Venice.

Today, Camden Town’s urban landscape is a rich and inspiring mix of historical styles and includes elegant Georgian houses,  grand Victorian and Edwardian terraces, charming cottages,  converted warehouses and workshop apartments, modern housing blocks from 1060s, and newly built homes often in boutique, pocket developments.

Camden Town is in the NW1 postcode which covers parts of Euston, Regent’s Park, Baker Street, Somers Town and Primrose Hill.
