SHOREDITCH & WHITECHAPEL

‘When I grow rich, say the bells of Shoreditch’ – Unlike the old rhyme 'Oranges and Lemons' insinuates, you don’t have to be rich to live in one of London’s trendiest areas. Once a place where actors, poets and spies lived, Shoreditch is now a hub for city and the creative industry professionals to work and play together.

With its vast array of bars and restaurants, Shoreditch’s social side is quite astounding. Venture through some of its backstreets and you’ll stumble upon a much more sophisticated side of Shoreditch with its designer shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Shoreditch really does have something for everyone.

Steeped in history, Whitechapel is named after a small chapel dedicated to St Mary which was destroyed in World War II. The terrifying Whitechapel Murders occurred between 1888 and 1891 some of which were committed by Jack the Ripper, and the famous 'Elephant Man' was also once a resident. The notorious Kray brothers also frequented the area with their gangland antics.

Branded as east London’s Zone 1 Crossrail hotspot where houses are still rising, Whitechapel is a fast changing, rich, multicultural and vibrant area a stroll from the City of London. Whitechapel’s central London location and connectivity are the major attractions. The lack of parks and open green spaces plus a high number of dilapidated terraces, derelict buildings and neglected streets which are in urgent need of smartening up – all have discouraged more affluent Londoners from relocating in the Whitechapel district.

Relatively underdeveloped, the area is set to attract considerable investment in the next decade. That is due to the new Whitechapel Crossrail station which is planned to take passengers to Shenfield in the east and Heathrow and Reading in the west via Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street and Paddington.

The first major development in Whitechapel is The Silk District, a £90 million project by L&Q and Mount Anvil is the first significant development marking another new chapter for this area which, according to the Tower Hamlets council, could have over 3,500 new homes built over the coming years. In addition to that are many new shops, restaurants, cafés, offices, and schools and scientific research facilities such as one planned for Queen Mary University of London.
