Elephant and Castle area guide

Elephant & Castle, London SE17

Elephant and Castle is a rapidly changing South London district within the Borough of Southwark.  It covers an area of 122 hectares south of the Thames and north of Kennington and Walworth neighbourhoods. Its modern identity was built on the large streetscape with a busy junction adjacent to Northern and Bakerloo line Underground stations, London College of Communications and Metropolitan Tabernacle church and the iconic Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre which was closed in September 2020 and is currently subject to demolition and re-development. Today the area is increasingly identified by recently built, modern new homes and the landscape punctuated by tall buildings such as the Strata and One the Elephant.

Devastated during the Second World War, Elephant and Castle went through decades of inadequate planning and redevelopment which prioritised heavy road traffic over pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

Identified in the Mayor’s London Plan of March 2015 as an opportunity area, it includes the Elephant and Castle junction and shopping centre, the Heygate estate, Walworth Road, the Pullens estate, West Square, St George’s Circus, the Enterprise Quarter bounded by London Road, Borough Road and Newington Causeway and the Rockingham estate.

The 1.5billion regeneration project is well underway and the area attracts steady investors, home buyers, young professionals and students. Once complete, the regeneration of Elephant and Castle will have over 2,500 new homes, at least 50 new shops and restaurants, new open green spaces (Elephant Park is already open for public) local schools and over 6,000 new jobs.

Transport connections from Elephant & Castle are superb with many different busses passing through, a Tube station serviced by both the Northern and Bakerloo lines and with an overground station for Thameslink and Southeastern rail services.

The iconic Strata Tower is also the new home of Chase Evans’ Head Office and Property Management.  As the recommended letting agent for the landmark residential in Elephant and Castle, One The Elephant, Chase Evans has an onsite office at No 5. St Gabriel Walk, London 6E1 6FS.
